ASTM D6482 — Aqueous Polymer Quenchant Testing with Agitation (Tensi Method)
The standard for evaluating aqueous polymer quenchants — the environmentally-friendly alternative to quench oil.
What is ASTM D6482?
ASTM D6482-06 — "Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Aqueous Polymer Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Tensi Method)" — evaluates the cooling performance of aqueous polymer quenchants including poly(alkylene glycol) (PAG), poly(ethyl oxazoline) (PEOx), poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP).
Aqueous polymer quenchants are increasingly replacing mineral quench oils in many industrial applications due to their fire resistance, controllable cooling rate (by adjusting concentration), lower environmental impact, and reduced maintenance burden. Unlike oils, which have fixed cooling rates, polymer quenchant behaviour changes significantly with concentration, temperature, and agitation rate — making rigorous standardised testing essential.
D6482 uses the Tensi Agitation Assembly — a purpose-built impeller system — to reproduce controlled agitation conditions. Since aqueous polymer quenching performance is highly sensitive to agitation, the standard's agitation-controlled setup provides repeatable, comparable results across labs.
Apparatus & Key Specifications
ASTM D6482 mandates the following apparatus — all requirements are met by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer platform.
Reported Parameters
ASTM D6482 requires the following parameters to be calculated and reported for each test run. ProQuench software computes all of these automatically.
Reference Fluid Limits
These acceptance limits must be met when testing the calibration reference fluid — verifying equipment and probe are within specification.
Who Uses ASTM D6482?
From global quench oil producers to aerospace forging shops — ASTM D6482 is relied upon across industries where quenchant quality directly impacts part performance and process safety.
Polymer Quenchant Manufacturers
Certify polymer quenchant products per ASTM D6482 across multiple concentrations and agitation levels. Generate standardised performance datasheets for customer qualification.
Heat Treaters Using Polymer Quenchants
Monitor in-service polymer bath concentration and performance to prevent under- or over-quenching. D6482 provides the standardised test method for routine bath management.
Automotive Component Manufacturers
Meet fire-safety regulations and environmental compliance requirements by qualifying polymer quenchant alternatives to mineral oil for gear, shaft, and structural part hardening.
Aerospace Heat Treatment
Qualify polymer quenchants for complex aerospace steel components where precise, controllable cooling rates — adjustable by concentration — are required for distortion control.
R&D Laboratories
Study polymer quenchant formulation behaviour across concentration ranges and agitation levels. D6482 is the standard reference for academic and industrial polymer quenchant research.
Environmentally Focused Facilities
Transition from mineral quench oil to polymer quenchants to reduce fire hazard, waste disposal costs, and VOC emissions — with D6482 providing the standardised validation pathway.

How ProVaC Enables ASTM D6482 Compliance
Every aspect of ASTM D6482 is directly addressed by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer, Inconel Probes, and ProQuench V3 software.
Polymer Quenchant Support
ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer with Tensi attachment supports D6482 testing for all common polymer quenchant types — PAG, PVP, PEOx, and PSA — at variable concentration and agitation.
Agitation Speed Control
The Tensi assembly on ProVaC's system is equipped with variable-speed impeller control (adjustable RPM) and optical tachometer verification — ensuring reproducible agitation per D6482.
Concentration Monitoring
ProQuench logs and trends cooling curves by concentration level, letting polymer quenchant users build concentration-performance charts and set automated bath-top-up triggers.
Probe Reconditioning Tracking
ProQuench maintains a full probe usage log. The system alerts operators when 200-quench or 2-year reconditioning thresholds are approaching, ensuring calibration integrity per D6482.
Same Probe — Dual Standard Ready
The Inconel probe geometry is identical to D6200/ISO 9950. Switch from oil to polymer testing by swapping the quench vessel for the Tensi assembly — no probe change needed.
How to Generate a ASTM D6482 Compliant Report
From probe preparation to signed PDF report — a complete ASTM D6482 test run with ProVaC equipment takes under 30 minutes.
Install Inconel Probe into Tensi Chamber
Mount the Inconel 600 probe into the Tensi Agitation Assembly's fixed-geometry chamber. Verify probe usage count against the 200-quench reconditioning threshold tracked by ProQuench.
Set Polymer Concentration & Prepare Bath
Fill the Tensi chamber with polymer quenchant at target concentration. Verify bath temperature is within specification — polymer quenchant cooling behaviour is highly sensitive to both concentration and temperature.
Heat Probe to 850 °C & Set Impeller to 1000 rpm
While the probe heats to 850 °C in the furnace, set the Tensi impeller to 1000 rpm (standard) and verify speed with the optical tachometer — a mandatory D6482 calibration step.
Transfer Probe into Agitated Polymer Bath
Transfer the heated probe into the Tensi chamber with the impeller running. The controlled agitation produces a repeatable cooling curve characteristic of that polymer concentration at that agitation level.
Record & Analyse Agitated Cooling Curve
ProQuench logs the polymer concentration, bath temperature, and impeller speed alongside the cooling curve. Six parameters are auto-calculated — the same set as D6200, now under agitated polymer conditions.
Generate D6482 Report & Concentration Trend
A D6482 compliant PDF report is produced with cooling curve, all six parameters, and Tensi agitation metadata. ProQuench builds polymer concentration-versus-cooling-performance trend charts for bath management.
