What is CQI-9?

CQI-9 — "Heat Treat System Assessment" — is the AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group) process quality assessment standard for heat treatment operations supplying to the automotive industry. Published in its 4th Edition in 2020, CQI-9 is a mandatory requirement for heat treaters in the supply chains of Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis (FCA).

CQI-9 covers the full spectrum of heat treatment operations including carburising, nitriding, through-hardening, induction hardening, and annealing. CQI-9 does not define a single test principle — it is a quality system assessment framework. For liquid quench media monitoring, CQI-9 Table A3 requires periodic cooling curve testing following ASTM D6200 methodology: an Inconel 600 probe (12.5 mm × 60 mm) heated to 850 °C is quenched into a 2000 mL still sample of quench oil, and the resulting cooling curve is analysed for key parameters (CRmax, T(CRmax), CR300, Time600, Time400, Time200). These results are compared to the oil supplier's specification and internal trending data to detect quench oil degradation.
