ASTM D6549 — Quenchant Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Drayton Unit)
The only ASTM standard covering ALL quenchant types with direct, metered flow-velocity agitation control.
What is ASTM D6549?
ASTM D6549-06 — "Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Drayton Unit)" — is the most general-purpose of all five quenching standards, covering oils, water, brine, and aqueous polymer quenchants in a single test procedure.
The key technical differentiator of D6549 is its use of the Drayton Agitation Unit, which features a direct-reading flowmeter for precise, reportable flow velocity in litres per minute (L/min). This is a significant advantage over the Tensi method (D6482), which uses impeller RPM as an indirect proxy for agitation intensity. Direct L/min measurement makes D6549 results more reproducible across different lab setups and more meaningful for correlating to industrial agitated quench tank performance.
D6549's versatility — covering all quenchant types — makes it the preferred standard for multipurpose testing laboratories that handle multiple product lines.
Apparatus & Key Specifications
ASTM D6549 mandates the following apparatus — all requirements are met by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer platform.
Reported Parameters
ASTM D6549 requires the following parameters to be calculated and reported for each test run. ProQuench software computes all of these automatically.
Reference Fluid Limits
These acceptance limits must be met when testing the calibration reference fluid — verifying equipment and probe are within specification.
Who Uses ASTM D6549?
From global quench oil producers to aerospace forging shops — ASTM D6549 is relied upon across industries where quenchant quality directly impacts part performance and process safety.
Multipurpose Testing Laboratories
Test oils, polymers, water, and brine within a single standard. D6549's versatility makes it the preferred choice for labs that handle multiple quenchant product types.
Aerospace Heat Treatment
Evaluate quenching media under simulated agitated conditions for aerospace steel components. D6549's direct L/min flow measurement provides the most industrially representative results.
Automotive High-Volume Heat Treaters
Qualify quenchants for high-agitation production quench tanks. D6549 results directly correlate to agitated industrial tank performance — critical for automotive process validation.
Quench Media R&D Labs
Study how agitation intensity affects cooling performance of new quenchant formulations. D6549's variable flow rate enables systematic flow-velocity vs. quenching-severity studies.
Industrial Quench System Designers
Validate quenchant specifications for custom agitated quench tank installations. Direct L/min data from D6549 maps directly to pump specifications in industrial quench system design.
Polymer & Oil Quenchant Producers
Generate agitated cooling performance data for product literature and customer qualification. D6549 provides a single standard applicable across an entire quenchant product range.

How ProVaC Enables ASTM D6549 Compliance
Every aspect of ASTM D6549 is directly addressed by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer, Inconel Probes, and ProQuench V3 software.
Drayton-Compatible Configuration
ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer is configurable with the Drayton Agitation Unit for ASTM D6549 testing — covering oils, water, brine, and polymer quenchants within a single instrument platform.
Direct L/min Flow Reporting
The Drayton setup on ProVaC's system includes the large-diameter flowmeter for direct L/min measurement, ensuring results are reportable, reproducible, and comparable across facilities.
Universal Quenchant Platform
Switch between still (D6200), Tensi agitation (D6482), and Drayton agitation (D6549) modes on a single Pro-Quenchometer — serving facilities that qualify multiple quenchant types.
Flow-Rate vs. Cooling Performance Charts
ProQuench plots cooling performance against flow velocity, giving R&D labs and quench oil manufacturers clear visualisation of how agitation intensity affects each quenchant's characteristics.
Industrial Quench Tank Correlation
Because D6549 uses direct L/min flow measurement, ProQuench can produce correlation reports between lab D6549 results and actual industrial agitated tank conditions — the most industrially relevant output.
How to Generate a ASTM D6549 Compliant Report
From probe preparation to signed PDF report — a complete ASTM D6549 test run with ProVaC equipment takes under 30 minutes.
Install Inconel Probe into Drayton Vessel
Mount the Inconel 600 probe into the Drayton Agitation Unit's modified 2000 mL stainless steel vessel. The removable vertical flow tube directs upward axial flow past the probe during testing.
Set Quenchant & Target Flow Rate (L/min)
Fill the Drayton vessel with the quenchant under test — oil, water, brine, or polymer. Set the DC centrifugal pump to the target flow velocity. Confirm the L/min reading on the large-diameter direct flowmeter.
Heat Probe to 850 °C
The integrated furnace heats the Inconel probe to 850 °C while the Drayton pump runs, maintaining consistent flow conditions. Both temperature and flow rate are logged before transfer.
Transfer Probe into Flowing Quenchant Bath
The probe is transferred into the agitated Drayton bath. The direct L/min flow measurement — unique to D6549 — is recorded alongside the cooling curve, enabling flow-rate-versus-quenching-severity correlation.
Analyse Cooling Curve with Flow Metadata
ProQuench calculates all six D6549 parameters from the cooling curve, with L/min flow rate logged as a test variable. Multiple runs at different flow rates build agitation-vs-performance charts automatically.
Generate D6549 Report with Flow-Rate Correlation
A D6549 compliant PDF report is produced including cooling curve, parameters, and the reported L/min flow velocity. ProQuench can overlay multiple flow-rate runs to show quenchant sensitivity to agitation intensity.
